My Inbox is on Fire

My Inbox is on fire; and has been since November. I’ve been re-reading World On Fire (2003) by Amy Chua. She’s a long time professor at Yale Law School. The subtitle of the book is: How Exporting Free Market Democracy Breeds Ethnic Hatred and Global Instability. Unfortunately, not many people read it. Moreover, no one “got it”.

From the dust jacket:

“After the fall of the Berlin Wall, a consensus emerged–not only in the West but elsewhere–that the magical combination of free markets and democracy would transform the world into a community of modernized, peace-loving nations, and individuals into civic-minded citizens and consumers. Ethnic hatred, religious zealotry, and other “backward” aspects of underdevelopment would be swept away.”

Indeed

My Inbox says the world is in fire, now more than ever. Below is a sampling from a few days. And, that barely scratches the surface  of what hits me on a daily basis. It’s overwhelming, to say the least.

Forget that my Inbox is on fire. Hey now girl, pass that bottle over here.

  1. “My Inbox” consists of emails, mostly from writers/bloggers on WordPress, Substack, and readers on Goodreads. Also, some newsletters I subscribe to; and a few (very) personal emails.
And – then there’s YouTube, which I spend a great deal of my day on, via my Smart TV.
All of which is surveilled. For the purpose of keeping me engaged. So as to sell me stuff I do not need, or want. Additionally, to influence me with regard to who I vote for.

Overwhelmed, doesn’t give it its do, does it? No wonder many people are stressed to the breaking point.

    How DO YOU unwind? De-stress?
